The Meadow

A sketch from 'The Meadow' from Ray Bradbury's collection of short stories from 'The Golden Apples of the Sun'. The watchman contemplates the world he loves and re-builds everyday.

Here's another interesting story that continues the theme of perceived reality like in "Sun and Shadwow". My guess is that Brabury sees himself as the watchman of all the worlds he has created through his writing. Like the watchman, he feels more at home in his fictional world than in the real world outside the fence.

"So help me God, we need more crazy people and night watchmen."

We need more people who take the time to contemplate the world around them, who take time to be introspective rather than goal oriented.

James Hilton in Lost Horizon had the following exchange, between Chang the llama and the Missionary woman:
Missionary: What do the llama's do?
Chang: They are engaged, madam, in contemplation and the pursuit of wisdom.
Missionary: But that isn't doing anything!
Chang: Then, madam, they do nothing.

I seem to recall that "Lost Horizon" reckons somewhat in our past history. Did you have an out of print, antique copy back on Upshur Road?

Great quote and reference by the way.
